A vulnerability was found in GNU cfengine up to 2.1.0. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function ReceiveTransaction
of the file net.c of the component Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in net.c for cfengine 2.x before 2.0.8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain packets with modified length values, which is trusted by the ReceiveTransaction function when using a buffer provided by the BusyWithConnection function.
The weakness was disclosed 09/25/2003 by Nick Cleaton as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0849 since 10/08/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14317 (Cfengine cfservd ReceiveTransaction Function Remote Overflow (version check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 2.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2394.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13289), Tenable (14317) and Exploit-DB (105).
