A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in HTTP Commander 4.0. Affected is some unknown processing of the file Openfile.aspx/Html.aspc. The manipulation of the argument file
with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in (1) Openfile.aspx and (2) Html.aspx in HTTP Commander 4.0 allows remote attackers to view arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the file parameter.
The bug was discovered 11/06/2003. The weakness was disclosed 11/06/2003 by LINUX (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-1166 since 05/04/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11448 (HTTP Commander Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
