The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting vulnerability (XSS) in AN HTTP 1.41e allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary web script or HTML as other users via a URL containing the script.

The bug was discovered 01/04/2003. The weakness was presented 12/31/2003 by D4rkGr3y (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-1271 since 11/16/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 361 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10994 (AN HTTPD Cross Site Scripting Vulnerability).
