Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP SP2 and earlier allows remote attackers to spoof the address bar and possibly conduct phishing attacks by re-opening the window to a malicious Shockwave Flash application, then changing the window location back to a trusted URL while the Flash application is still loading. NOTE: this is a different vulnerability than CVE-2006-1192.

The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was released 04/04/2006 by Hai Nam Luke as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-1626 since 04/05/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/12/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1839 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21685 (MS06-021: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (916281)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100035 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer Missing (MS06-021)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25634), Tenable (21685), SecurityFocus (BID 17404†), OSVDB (24465†) and Secunia (SA19521†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-2289, VDB-2290, VDB-2291 and VDB-2292.
