A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apple Quicktime Streaming Server 4.1.1 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the file parse_xml.cgi of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation of the argument filename
with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability (File). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. parse_xml.cgi in Apple Darwin Streaming Server 4.1.1 allows remote attackers to determine the existence of arbitrary files by using ".." sequences in the filename parameter and comparing the resulting error messages.
The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2003 by Joe Testa with Rapid7 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-1413 since 10/19/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
