BEA WebLogic Server up to 7.0.0.1 In-Memory Session Replication race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in BEA WebLogic Server up to 7.0.0.1 (Application Server Software). This affects an unknown function of the component In-Memory Session Replication Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in BEA WebLogic Server and Express 5.1 through 7.0.0.1, when using in-memory session replication or replicated stateful session beans, causes the same buffer to be provided to two users, which could allow one user to see session data that was intended for another user.

The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2003 with BEA Systems (Website). The advisory is shared at dev.bea.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-1438 since 10/22/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87208 (Oracle WebLogic Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEA03-27.00,BEA03-29.00,BEA03-26.01)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (11221). The entry 20210 is pretty similar.
