A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in NetBSD up to 3.0 (Operating System). This affects some unknown functionality of the component Intel Random Number Generator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a security check vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-358. The product does not implement or incorrectly implements one or more security-relevant checks as specified by the design of a standardized algorithm, protocol, or technique. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Intel RNG Driver in NetBSD 1.6 through 3.0 may incorrectly detect the presence of the pchb interface, which will cause it to always generate the same random number, which allows remote attackers to more easily crack encryption keys generated from the interface.
The weakness was released 04/13/2006 by Matthias Scheler with Debian (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ftp.netbsd.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-1833 since 04/19/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1211 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Upgrading to version 2.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at netbsd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (25786). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 2150 and 2149.
