Novell GroupWise up to 2.0 Messaging Agent Service stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Novell GroupWise up to 2.0 (Groupware Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Messaging Agent Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in Novell GroupWise Messenger before 2.0 Public Beta 2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long Accept-Language value without a comma or semicolon. NOTE: due to a typo, the original ZDI advisory accidentally referenced CVE-2006-0092. This is the correct identifier.

The bug was discovered 03/16/2006. The weakness was disclosed 04/14/2006 by Agent with cirt.dk (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.novell.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0992 since 03/03/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 1 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 28 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21243 (Novell GroupWise Messenger Accept Language Remote Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at novell.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 6414. In this case the pattern Accept-Language is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3994.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25828), Exploit-DB (1679), Tenable (21243), SecurityFocus (BID 17503†) and OSVDB (24617†).
