Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and earlier allows remote attackers to bypass zone restrictions and read arbitrary files by (1) modifying the createTextRange method and using CreateLink, as demonstrated using LinkillerSaveRef, LinkillerJPU, and Linkiller, or (2) modifying the createRange method and using the FIND dialog to select text, as demonstrated using Findeath, aka the "Function Pointer Override Cross Domain" vulnerability.
The weakness was released 11/11/2003 by Liu Die Yu as MS03-048 as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at marc.info. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0815 since 09/18/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10861 (MS02-005: MSIE 5.01 5.5 6.0 Cumulative Patch (890923)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100003 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update Not Installed (MS03-048)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
