A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). This affects the function vm_map_find
of the component Shared Memory Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The shmat system call in the System V Shared Memory interface for FreeBSD 5.2 and earlier, NetBSD 1.3 and earlier, and OpenBSD 2.6 and earlier, does not properly decrement a shared memory segment s reference count when the vm_map_find function fails, which could allow local users to gain read or write access to a portion of kernel memory and gain privileges.
The bug was discovered 02/01/2004. The weakness was disclosed 02/05/2004 by Joost Pol (DiGiT) with Pine Digital Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at pine.nl. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0114. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12614 (FreeBSD : SA-04:02.shmat), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15061), Exploit-DB (23655), Tenable (12614), SecurityFocus (BID 9586†) and OSVDB (3836†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
