BEA WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express version 8.1 up to SP2, 7.0 up to SP4, and 6.1 up to SP6 may store the database username and password for an untargeted JDBC connection pool in plaintext in config.xml, which allows local users to gain privileges.
The bug was discovered 04/13/2004. The weakness was released 04/13/2004 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1758 since 03/10/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
