A vulnerability was found in Symantec Norton Antispam 2004 (Anti-Spam Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function LaunchCustomRuleWizard in the library symspam.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the SymSpamHelper ActiveX component (symspam.dll) in Norton AntiSpam 2004, as used in Norton Internet Security 2004, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long parameter to the LaunchCustomRuleWizard method.

The weakness was published 04/15/2004 by Mark Litchfield as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0363 since 03/19/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
