Ethereal up to 0.10.2 Dissector memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Ethereal (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in Ethereal 0.8.13 to 0.10.2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via the (1) NetFlow, (2) IGAP, (3) EIGRP, (4) PGM, (5) IrDA, (6) BGP, (7) ISUP, or (8) TCAP dissectors.

The weakness was released 12/10/2003 by Stefan Esser as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0176 since 02/25/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Abhisek Datta in ANSI C and been published 4 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20706 (Ubuntu 4.10 : linux-source-2.6.8.1 vulnerabilities (USN-82-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2462. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31599.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15569), Tenable (20706) and Exploit-DB (167). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 21829, 21831, 22885 and 82045.
