OpenBSD 3.4 isakmpd memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in OpenBSD 3.4 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component isakmpd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

isakmpd in OpenBSD 3.4 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a an ISAKMP packet with a malformed Cert Request payload, which causes an integer underflow that is used in a malloc operation that is not properly handled, as demonstrated by the Striker ISAKMP Protocol Test Suite.

The bug was discovered 03/17/2004. The weakness was released 05/04/2004 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0220 since 03/13/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19096 (FreeBSD : isakmpd payload handling denial-of-service vulnerabilities (b7cb488c-8349-11d8-a41f-0020ed76ef5a)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15629) and Tenable (19096). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 21824, 21825, 21827 and 21828.
