A vulnerability was found in Ethereal (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code block of the component Presentation Protocol Selector Handler. Ethereal 0.10.1 to 0.10.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a zero-length Presentation protocol selector.
The bug was discovered 03/22/2004. The weakness was released 05/04/2004 by Stefan Esser as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0367 since 03/22/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 43 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12537 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
