The KAME IKE Daemon Racoon, when authenticating a peer during Phase 1, validates the X.509 certificate but does not verify the RSA signature authentication, which allows remote attackers to establish unauthorized IP connections or conduct man-in-the-middle attacks using a valid, trusted X.509 certificate.
The bug was discovered 04/07/2004. The weakness was presented 06/01/2004 by Ralf Spenneberg as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0155 since 02/13/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
