Linux Kernel 2.4.0 SoundBlaster Driver denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel 2.4.0 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown function of the component SoundBlaster Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The OSS code for the Sound Blaster (sb16) driver in Linux 2.4.x before 2.4.26, when operating in 16 bit mode, does not properly handle certain sample sizes, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) via a sample with an odd number of bytes.

The bug was discovered 04/14/2004. The weakness was disclosed 06/01/2004 (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0178 since 02/25/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 48 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14309 (RHEL 2.1 : kernel (RHSA-2004:437)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 2.4.26 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
