A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 5.1/5.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component LVM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

LVM for AIX 5.1 and 5.2 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack.

The issue has been introduced in 05/01/2001. The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2004 (Website). The advisory is shared at www-1.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0545 since 06/08/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1193 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14622 (AIX 5.1 : IY55681), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 5.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
