Aspell 0.50.5 compress.c c/d stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Aspell 0.50.5. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file compress.c. The manipulation of the argument c/d with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the word-list-compress functionality in compress.c for Aspell allow local users to execute arbitrary code via a long entry in the wordlist that is not properly handled when using the (1) "c" compress option or (2) "d" decompress option.

The weakness was shared 06/08/2004 by Shaun Colley (shaun2k2) as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0548 since 06/09/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by c0d3r in ANSI C and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16015 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : aspell (MDKSA-2004:153)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16371), Tenable (16015) and Exploit-DB (669). The entries 61278, 79334, 80152 and 100239 are related to this item.
