SquirrelMail up to 1.5 Dev cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in SquirrelMail (Mail Client Software). This affects an unknown part. The manipulation of the argument $mailer/$senderNames_part/$event_title/$event_text with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Squirrelmail 1.2.10 and earlier allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTML or script via (1) the $mailer variable in read_body.php, (2) the $senderNames_part variable in mailbox_display.php, and possibly other vectors including (3) the $event_title variable or (4) the $event_text variable.

The weakness was presented 08/06/2004 (Website). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0639 since 07/08/2004. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14217 (SquirrelMail < 1.2.11 Multiple Script XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16285), Tenable (14217), SecurityFocus (BID 10450†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-4976†). See VDB-90811 for similar entry. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
