Oracle10g MDSYS.MD2.SDO_CODE_SIZE LAYER memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Oracle10g Enterprise 10.1.0.2/Personal 10.1.0.2/Standard 10.1.0.2. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component MDSYS.MD2.SDO_CODE_SIZE. The manipulation of the argument LAYER with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the SDO_CODE_SIZE procedure of the MD2 package (MDSYS.MD2.SDO_CODE_SIZE) in Oracle 10g before 10.1.0.2 Patch 2 allows local users to execute arbitrary code via a long LAYER parameter.

The bug was discovered 04/13/2005. The weakness was released 08/31/2004 by Esteban Martinez Fayo (Website). The advisory is available at securiteam.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1774 since 04/19/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18034 (Oracle Database 10g Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31481.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20078), Exploit-DB (25397), Tenable (18034), SecurityFocus (BID 13145†) and OSVDB (9867†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-21993, VDB-21994, VDB-21995 and VDB-21997. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
