CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 09/13/2004. The weakness was shared 09/21/2004 by Marc Ruef with scip AG as Pinnacle ShowCenter Skin Denial of Service as confirmed advisory (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1699 since 02/21/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The advisory points out:

Editing the user profiles or using an old one was not sucessfull. It seems there has been something overwritten the user is not easily able to undo. The surprise was, that the Pinnacle device was able to get the data as usual. I tought this has to do with the source IP address because the Pinnacle device and my testing machine have not had the same IP address. I changed these to see the difference but there was none. I also tought the hidden user profile has something to do with the HTTP_USER_AGENT variant sent by the web browser. I was not able to succeed with using different web browsers.

A public exploit has been developed by Marc Ruef in URL and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:ShowCenter/SettingsBase.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14824 (Pinnacle ShowCenter Skin DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The code used by the exploit is:

<plugin_procedure_exploit>open|send GET /ShowCenter/SettingsBase.php?Skin=ATK HTTP/1.0\n\n|sleep|close|pattern_exists failed to open stream OR No such file or directory in OR loaduserprofile(): Failed opening required OR \Pinnacle\ShowCenter\</plugin_procedure_exploit>

It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling tcp/80 (Web Services). A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

A possible fix requires some manual hacking.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17463) and Tenable (14824).
