Trolltech Qt 3.3.3 XPM Parser denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Trolltech Qt 3.3.3 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component XPM Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The XPM parser in the QT library (qt3) before 3.3.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed image file that triggers a null dereference, a different vulnerability than CVE-2004-0693.

The bug was discovered 08/19/2004. The weakness was released 09/28/2004 by Chris Evans (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0692 since 07/13/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15379 (Debian DSA-542-1 : qt - unsanitised input), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 3.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31584.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17041) and Tenable (15379). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 22260 and 22262.
