A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GTK+ up to 2.4.4. Affected is an unknown code of the file io-xpm.c of the component gdk-pixbuf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in pixbuf_create_from_xpm (io-xpm.c) in the XPM image decoder for gtk+ 2.4.4 (gtk2) and earlier, and gdk-pixbuf before 0.22, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain n_col and cpp values that enable a heap-based buffer overflow. NOTE: this identifier is ONLY for gtk+. It was incorrectly referenced in an advisory for a different issue (CVE-2004-0687).
The weakness was published 10/20/2004 by Chris Evans as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0782. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18908 (FreeBSD : gdk-pixbuf -- image decoding vulnerabilities (3d1e9267-073f-11d9-b45d-000c41e2cdad)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17386) and Tenable (18908). Similar entries are available at 22312, 22321 and 22325.
