OpenSSL up to 0.9.7c Kerberos Ticket memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Kerberos Ticket Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The SSL/TLS handshaking code in OpenSSL 0.9.7a, 0.9.7b, and 0.9.7c, when using Kerberos ciphersuites, does not properly check the length of Kerberos tickets during a handshake, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted SSL/TLS handshake that causes an out-of-bounds read.

The issue has been introduced in 12/21/2001. The weakness was shared 11/23/2004 by Stephen Henson with OpenSSL (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0112 since 02/02/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 817 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17750 (OpenSSL < 0.9.6m / 0.9.7d Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38257 (OpenSSL Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31601.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15508) and Tenable (17750). The entries 75, 300, 418 and 448 are related to this item.
