A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in PHPX 3.2.3 (Content Management System). Affected is some unknown processing of the file main.inc.php. The manipulation of the argument body with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. Cross-site scripting vulnerability (XSS) in PHPX 3.2.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary script as other users by injecting arbitrary HTML or script into (1) keywords argument of main.inc.php, (2) body argument of help.inc.php, or (3) the subject field in Personal Messages and Forum.

The bug was discovered 02/03/2004. The weakness was disclosed 11/23/2004 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.info. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0248. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 294 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:main.inc.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12120 (PHPX Multiple Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (15051). The entry 22393 is pretty similar.
