Mozilla up to 1.7.3 nsnntpprotocol.cpp heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mozilla up to 1.7.3 (Web Browser). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file nsnntpprotocol.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in MSG_UnEscapeSearchUrl in nsNNTPProtocol.cpp for Mozilla 1.7.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via an NNTP URL (news:) with a trailing \ (backslash) character, which prevents a string from being NULL terminated.

The weakness was shared 12/29/2004 by Maurycy Prodeus as MFSA2005-06 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-1316 since 12/30/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16160 (RHEL 2.1 / 3 : mozilla (RHSA-2005:038)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3253.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18711) and Tenable (16160). The entries 949 and 25160 are related to this item.
