A vulnerability was found in Ansible up to 1.6.6. It has been classified as very critical. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a argument injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-88. The product constructs a string for a command to be executed by a separate component
in another control sphere, but it does not properly delimit the
intended arguments, options, or switches within that command string. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple argument injection vulnerabilities in Ansible before 1.6.7 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by leveraging access to an Ansible managed host and providing a crafted fact, as demonstrated by a fact with (1) a trailing " src=" clause, (2) a trailing " temp=" clause, or (3) a trailing " validate=" clause accompanied by a shell command.
The weakness was published 04/21/2023 as ocert-2014-004. The advisory is shared at ocert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-4967 since 07/15/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/15/2024). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122535 (Fedora Security Update for ansible (FEDORA-2014-8901)).
Upgrading to version 1.6.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 62a1295a3e08cb6c3e9f1b2a1e6e5dcaeab32527 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
