GNU sharutils 4.2/4.2.1 line stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in GNU sharutils 4.2/4.2.1. This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation of the argument line with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in shar in GNU sharutils 4.2.1 allows local users to execute arbitrary code via a long -o command line argument.

The weakness was shared 12/31/2004 by Shaun Colley as Bug 2155 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.fedora.us. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-1772 since 03/29/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18147 (RHEL 2.1 / 3 / 4 : sharutils (RHSA-2005:377)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117969 (CentOS Security Update for sharutils (CESA-2005:377)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15759) and Tenable (18147). The entries 24771 and 22890 are related to this item.
