A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component COM Object Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4 and 6 SP1 and earlier allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by instantiating certain COM objects from Wmm2fxa.dll as ActiveX controls including (1) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffect1Input, (2) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffect1Input.1, (3) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffect2Inputs, (4) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffect2Inputs.1, (5) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffectInplace1Input, and (6) DXImageTransform.Microsoft.MMSpecialEffectInplace1Input.1, which causes memory corruption during garbage collection.
The weakness was released 06/13/2006 by Andreas Sandblad as MS06-021 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1303 since 03/20/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21685 (MS06-021: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (916281)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.
Applying the patch MS06-021 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 6681. In this case the pattern B4DC8DD9-2CC1-4081-9B2B-20D7030234EF
