Ipswitch WS_FTP Server 4.0.2 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary programs as SYSTEM by using the SITE command to modify certain iFtpSvc options that are handled by iftpmgr.exe.

The weakness was published 12/31/2004 by Hugh Mann (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-1885 since 05/04/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed in C++. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14598 (WS_FTP Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (OF, DoS, Cmd Exec)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27236 (Ipswitch WS_FTP Multiple Vulnerabilities).
