A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser). This issue affects the function OnKeyPress
of the component JavaScript. The manipulation as part of a Form leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.4, 2.0.x before 2.0.0.8, Mozilla Suite 1.7.13, Mozilla SeaMonkey 1.0.2 and other versions before 1.1.5, and Netscape 8.1 and earlier allow user-assisted remote attackers to read arbitrary files by tricking a user into typing the characters of the target filename in a text box and using the OnKeyDown, OnKeyPress, and OnKeyUp Javascript keystroke events to change the focus and cause those characters to be inserted into a file upload input control, which can then upload the file when the user submits the form.
The weakness was disclosed 06/06/2006 by Charles McAuley with Mozilla (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.grok.org.uk. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2894 since 06/07/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $25k-$100k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/13/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27528 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : MozillaFirefox (MozillaFirefox-4572)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165052 (SUSE Security Update for Mozilla Firefox, SeaMonkey (SUSE-SA:2007:057)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
