Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 JavaScript OnKeyPress Form input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser). This issue affects the function OnKeyPress of the component JavaScript. The manipulation as part of a Form leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Mozilla Firefox, 2.0.x before, Mozilla Suite 1.7.13, Mozilla SeaMonkey 1.0.2 and other versions before 1.1.5, and Netscape 8.1 and earlier allow user-assisted remote attackers to read arbitrary files by tricking a user into typing the characters of the target filename in a text box and using the OnKeyDown, OnKeyPress, and OnKeyUp Javascript keystroke events to change the focus and cause those characters to be inserted into a file upload input control, which can then upload the file when the user submits the form.

The weakness was disclosed 06/06/2006 by Charles McAuley with Mozilla (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.grok.org.uk. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2894 since 06/07/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $25k-$100k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/13/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27528 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : MozillaFirefox (MozillaFirefox-4572)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165052 (SUSE Security Update for Mozilla Firefox, SeaMonkey (SUSE-SA:2007:057)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (27528). techweb.com is providing further details. The entries 2296, 2298, 3404 and 3406 are pretty similar.
