Linux Kernel up to 2.2.23 proc/pid/mem mmap PROT_READ denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function mmap of the file proc/pid/mem. The manipulation of the argument PROT_READ with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Linux kernel 2.2.x allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) by using the mmap() function with a PROT_READ parameter to access non-readable memory pages through the /proc/pid/mem interface.

The weakness was presented 03/28/2003 by Michal Zalewski with BindView (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-1380. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14023 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel22 (MDKSA-2003:039)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at securityfocus.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10884) and Tenable (14023). See 19 for similar entry.
