ID Software Quake II Server Windows up to 3.19 pathname path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in ID Software Quake II Server Windows up to 3.19. Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument pathname with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Absolute path traversal vulnerability in Quake II server before R1Q2 on Windows, as used in multiple products, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a "\/" in a pathname argument, as demonstrated by "download \/server.cfg".

The weakness was disclosed 10/27/2004 by Richard Stanway (Website). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-2594 since 11/29/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading to version 3.20 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (17892). The entries 18656, 23477, 23476 and 23475 are pretty similar.
