A vulnerability was found in phpMyAdmin up to 2.5.7 (Database Administration Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function eval
in the library config.lib.php of the file left.php. The manipulation of the argument cfg[LeftFrameLight
with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. Eval injection vulnerability in left.php in phpMyAdmin 2.5.1 up to 2.5.7, when LeftFrameLight is FALSE, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via a crafted table name.
The weakness was disclosed 06/28/2004 by Nasir Simbolon (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at eagle.kecapi.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-2631. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Nasir Simbolon in ANSI C and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:left.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14555 (GLSA-200407-22 : phpMyAdmin: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
