Carnegie Mellon University Cyrus IMAP Server up to 2.2.x memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The argument parser of the FETCH command in Cyrus IMAP Server 2.2.x through 2.2.8 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via certain commands such as (1) "body[p", (2) "binary[p", or (3) "binary[p") that cause an index increment error that leads to an out-of-bounds memory corruption.

The bug was discovered 11/23/2004. The weakness was released 01/10/2005 by Stefan Esser with eMatters (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1013 since 11/04/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19109 (FreeBSD : Cyrus IMAPd -- FETCH command out of bounds memory corruption (c0a269d5-3d16-11d9-8818-008088034841)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3344.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (19109). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 21897, 23675, 23662 and 23660.
