imlib 1.9.13/1.9.14 Image integer coercion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in imlib 1.9.13/1.9.14. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple integer overflows in the image handler for imlib 1.9.14 and earlier, which is used by gkrellm and several window managers, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and execute arbitrary code via certain image files.

The bug was discovered 09/16/2004. The weakness was presented 01/10/2005 by Pavel Kankovsky (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1026 since 11/12/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/05/2019).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 81 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15913 (GLSA-200412-03 : imlib: Buffer overflows in image decoding), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17416) and Tenable (15913). See 22321, 23667 and 22307 for similar entries.
