A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft W3Who ISAPI (affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality in the library w3who.dll of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Microsoft W3Who ISAPI (w3who.dll) allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTML and web script via (1) HTTP headers such as "Connection" or (2) invalid parameters whose values are echoed in the resulting error message.

The bug was discovered 12/06/2004. The weakness was published 01/10/2005 by Nicolas Gregoire with Exaprobe (Website). The advisory is available at marc.info. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1133 since 12/03/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15910 (Microsoft W3Who ISAPI w3who.dll Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90200 (Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit W3Who.DLL Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3199.
