A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in SquirrelMail (Mail Client Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the file webmail.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in webmail.php in SquirrelMail before 1.4.4 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via certain integer variables.
The bug was discovered 01/20/2005. The weakness was released 01/29/2005 by FraMe (Website). The advisory is available at squirrelmail.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0104 since 01/18/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:webmail.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16283 (Debian DSA-662-2 : squirrelmail - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12149 (SquirrelMail (below 1.4.4) Multiple Remote Input Validation Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
