Off-by-one error in the ldap scheme handling in the Rewrite module (mod_rewrite) in Apache 1.3 from 1.3.28, 2.0.46 and other versions before 2.0.59, and 2.2, when RewriteEngine is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted URLs that are not properly handled using certain rewrite rules.
The weakness was shared 07/28/2006 by Mark Dowd with ISS X-Force (Website). The advisory is available at apache.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-3747 since 07/20/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at httpd.apache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
