McAfee AntiSpyware 2005/2006 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in McAfee AntiSpyware 2005/2006. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in McSubMgr ActiveX control (mcsubmgr.dll) in McAfee Security Center 6.0.23 for Internet Security Suite 2006, Wireless Home Network Security, Personal Firewall Plus, VirusScan, Privacy Service, SpamKiller, AntiSpyware, and QuickClean allows remote user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary commands via long string parameters, which are later used in vsprintf.

The bug was discovered 07/19/2006. The weakness was shared 08/01/2006 by Karl Lynn (DiGiT) with eEye Digital Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at eeye.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-3961 since 08/01/2006. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mcafee.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 7862. In this case the pattern IsAppExpired is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4696.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 19265†), OSVDB (27698†), Secunia (SA21264†), SecurityTracker (ID 1016614†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-12426†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
