The bug was discovered 08/08/2006. The weakness was released 08/08/2006 by Peter Winter Smith with NGS Software as MS06-041 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Applying the patch MS06-041 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4599.
