firehol up to 1.223 firehol.sh symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in firehol up to 1.223. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file firehol.sh. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

firehol.sh in FireHOL before 1.224 creates temporary files with predictable file names, which could allow local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack.

The weakness was disclosed 01/24/2005 by Sam Couter (Website). The advisory is shared for download at gentoo.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0225 since 02/05/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16438 (GLSA-200502-01 : FireHOL: Insecure temporary file creation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.224 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19032) and Tenable (16438).
