A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component COM Object Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 and 6 does not properly handle uninitialized COM objects, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) and possibly execute arbitrary code, as demonstrated by the Nth function in the DirectAnimation.DATuple ActiveX control, aka "COM Object Instantiation Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 08/08/2006 by Cody Pierce and Will Dormann (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MS06-042 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-3638 since 07/17/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22184 (MS06-042: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (918899)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100036 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS06-042)).
Applying the patch MS06-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 7482. In this case the pattern 01002B17-5D93-4551-81E4-831FEF780A53
is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4593.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28039), Tenable (22184), SecurityFocus (BID 19340†), OSVDB (27852†) and Secunia (SA21396†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-1028, VDB-2344, VDB-2343 and VDB-2440.
