A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.8 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function skb_checksum_help
of the file netfilter/iptables of the component netfilter/iptables. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The netfilter/iptables module in Linux before 2.6.8.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (kernel crash) or bypass firewall rules via crafted packets, which are not properly handled by the skb_checksum_help function.
The issue has been introduced in 12/18/2003. The weakness was presented 05/02/2005 by Michael Kerrisk (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-0449 since 02/16/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 491 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21923 (CentOS 3 : kernel (CESA-2005:293)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117975 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:283)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.8.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17800) and Tenable (21923). See 935, 987, 1080 and 1233 for similar entries.
