A vulnerability was found in Ethereal 0.10.7/0.10.8/0.10.9 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the Etheric dissector in Ethereal 0.10.7 through 0.10.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code.
The bug was discovered 03/12/2005. The weakness was presented 05/02/2005 by Leon Juranic (Website). The advisory is available at gentoo.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0704 since 03/09/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19120 (FreeBSD : ethereal -- multiple protocol dissectors vulnerabilities (cb470368-94d2-11d9-a9e0-0001020eed82)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118402 (Ethereal Denial of Service and Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerabilities (enpa-sa-00018)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19665) and Tenable (19120). See 24073, 24062, 24608 and 24599 for similar entries.
