mysql up to 4.1.10 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in mysql (Database Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

mysql 4.0.23 and earlier and 4.1.x up to 4.1.10 allows remote authenticated users with insert and delete privileges to bypass library path restrictions and execute arbitrary libraries by using insert into to modify the mysql.func table which is processed by the udf_init function.

The bug was discovered 03/11/2005. The weakness was presented 05/02/2005 by Stefano Di Paola with isec (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-0710 since 03/11/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21926 (CentOS 3 : mysql-server (CESA-2005:348)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117956 (CentOS Security Update for MySQL (CESA-2005:348)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4022.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19658) and Tenable (21926). See 1271, 1272 and 24584 for similar entries.
