A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the SGI parser in ImageMagick before 6.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SGI image file.
The bug was discovered 03/23/2005. The weakness was published 05/02/2005 by Andrei Nigmatulin (Website). The advisory is shared at novell.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0762 since 03/17/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17673 (Debian DSA-702-1 : imagemagick - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120302 (Solaris Multiple vulnerabilities in ImageMagick).
Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
