Sun MySQL up to 5.0.25 Databank Creation Privilege Escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote privilege escalation vulnerability. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

MySQL before 4.1.21, 5.0 before 5.0.25, and 5.1 before 5.1.12, when run on case-sensitive filesystems, allows remote authenticated users to create or access a database when the database name differs only in case from a database for which they have permissions.

The bug was discovered 02/22/2006. The weakness was disclosed 08/17/2006 by Michal Prokopiuk (Website). The advisory is available at bugs.mysql.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-4226 since 08/18/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 176 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17807 (MySQL < 4.1.21 / 5.0.25 / 5.1.12 Access Control), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19257 (MySQL Create Database Bypass and Privilege Escalation (RHSA-2007:0152, RHSA-2007:0083)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugs.mysql.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28448) and Tenable (17807). The entries 2463 and 31860 are pretty similar.
