A vulnerability was found in AOL Instant Messenger up to 9.0 (Messaging Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Application Path Handler. AOL 9.0 Security Edition revision 4184.2340, and probably other versions, uses insecure permissions (Everyone/Full Control) for the "America Online 9.0" directory, which allows local users to gain privileges by replacing critical files.
The bug was discovered 02/09/2006. The weakness was released 08/18/2006 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0948 since 03/01/2006. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 190 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at aol.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
