AOL 9.0 Security Edition revision 4184.2340, and probably other versions, uses insecure permissions (Everyone/Full Control) for the "America Online 9.0" directory, which allows local users to gain privileges by replacing critical files.

The bug was discovered 02/09/2006. The weakness was released 08/18/2006 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0948 since 03/01/2006. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 190 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
